What are our emotions for?

It was great to see about 30 plus attendees at the talk on “Emotional Well Being and How To Handle Emotions Effectively” on the Saturday  morning of 30th March 2013 at Mindvalley auditorium. Ms Lina Esa Öberg, our wonderful speaker for the day, is a very friendly lady who gave up her legal profession to embark on her new career as a trainer and therapist on emotional wellbeing at the workplace.

At the beginning, the talk may not have been as fast paced as one might have imagined it should be, but it soon became apparent that it needed to be so as the topic was about one’s mind and functions – not exactly simple topics even at its most basic level. This realization came very quickly as Lina stumped the audience with the question,

What are our emotions for?

To make it more interesting and relational for participants, Lina presented slides of appropriate quotes and lyrics from well known singers which expresses the various kinds of emotions.

During the first half of the session, Lina presented the theory of how our actions are influenced by both our conscious and subconscious minds and the methodology to deal with negative emotions which involved a 3-step approach of recognizing emotions: identifying its causes and conducting a reality check to pre-empt impulsive reactions to any situation.

In the second half of the session, participants were divided into groups. Each group was given a different scenario with various stress conditions and were to discuss and figure how best to apply the methods taught earlier. This exercise was “easy” in the sense that since the situations were hypothetical, the participants could think more objectively than if they were in the actual stressful situations.

All participants were also given a stress (mental) evaluation form to fill so that each can assess her/his own stress tolerance level.

The talk ended around 1pm with a vote of thanks to Lina who took time off her busy schedule to give this presentation at no cost to our attendees, and also to Wu Han and Mindvalley for giving us free use of their beautiful auditorium.

BeCause is happy to have organized such a beneficial talk for those who wish  to learn how to control a very destructive emotion like anger and other negative emotions.  Thanks again very much to Lina for the wonderful knowledge filled Saturday given by her to all our participants! 😀  We hope everyone gained something that they can apply to and improve their daily lives.

Our next talk “Building Meaningful Relationships Through Authentic Communication” will be held on 27 April 2013 by Choy Boon Ling,  a corporate trainer specialising in the area of train-the-trainer, communication, interpersonal skills and curriculum development.  Be sure to check out our Facebook event page for more details and invite your friends!
